Are You A Balanced Mom?

We hear a lot about being balanced in modern life, from a balanced diet to a balanced exercise routine to a balanced life. But what does it all mean, especially if you are a mom?

Defining Balance

First let’s think about the word balance. According to m-w.com, there are three definitions for the word:

  • The state of having your weight spread equally so that you do not fall
  • The ability to move or to remain in a position without losing control or falling
  • A state in which different things occur in equal or proper amounts or have an equal or proper amount of importance

When it comes to the lives of most moms, the third and final definition is the one that moms probably all are striving for, but does a balanced life mean the same thing to everyone? And what can you do to achieve balance?

Be Realistic

Some moms out there probably have given up on the idea of a balanced life, thinking that giving equally to their children, spouses, homes and jobs, while still carving out time for themselves, is an impossible task. You may even find the idea of a balanced life as one that fills you with anxiety. Start then by removing the pressure of thinking balance means perfection. Nothing could be further from the truth. We may all try to eat enough fruit and vegetables each day so that our diets are balanced, but face it, some days that works better than others. The goal simply is to do better the next day, thus achieving balance.

Create Your Own Definition

Every day won’t be perfect. You may have to spend more time at work, cutting into your family time. Another way to combat any pressure associated with the idea of a balanced life is to create your own idea of what balance means to you. If a balanced work out routine means you walk two days and do some weight work another day, then that is what should be your goal. Someone else may decide another routine works best for her. Every one is different, so every one’s definition of balance will be different.

Walk Away

Lastly, don’t be afraid to let some things go. You have to prioritize what means the most to you and figure out how those things need to feature in your life. If something just isn’t that important to your happiness, walk away. It doesn’t have to be a part of your balanced life. It may feel wrong, but taking the time to figure out how to achieve your balanced life, while doing some things for yourself, will ultimately result in you being a better mom.
